Dear Colleagues,
The Fifth Leiden Cardiology Course will again being held at
the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), The Netherlands.
This year the main focus will be on invasive cardiology,
covering the exciting emerging fields of percutaneous valve
implantation procedures and catheter ablation procedures of life
threatening arrhythmias. The key role imaging plays during these
procedures will be highlighted both during life demonstrations
and presentations. Percutaneous aortic valve implantation
procedures help to improve the quality of life of patients
considered to be not operable. Ventricular tachycardia ablation
procedures may lower the recurrence rate and in ICD patients may
result in less episodes and shocks. Both important clinical
developments. In the near future integration of different
imaging both during valve implantation and VT ablation
procedures. Furthermore the surgical aspects of mitral valve
repair and specific topics in percutaneous revascularization
procedures will be discussed. The program of the 2009 meeting
will not only include presentations by an international faculty
but also includes hands-on Echo/MSCT-training, and life sessions
in the catheterization laboratory. Case discussions will be used
to illustrate the 2009 state-of-the-art procedures. The
organizing committee is honored that Dr. J. Narula, (University
of California, Orange, USA), will give the 29th Einthoven
Lecture entitled “Noninvasive imaging of the vulnerable plaque”.
Dr. Narula was trained as a cardiologist at the All India
Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. After finishing
his training he moved to the United States in 1989, after
different fellowships he was appointed at the Massachusetts
General Hospital. Currently he is Professor of Medicine Chief,
Division of Cardiology, and Associate Dean for Research at the
University of California, Irvine. Dr. Narula is involved in
clinical and basic research in the fields of heart failure and
atherosclerosis. His main focus is on development of novel
noninvasive imaging techniques. Dr. Narula has authored more
than 300 publications. Dr. Narula is currently Chief-Editor of
JACC Imaging. We are very much looking forward to meeting you in
Leiden, 15 and 16 January, 2009. |
