On Thursday the 28th of January and Friday the 29th of January
2010, the Leiden Cardiology Course will be organized again at the
Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), The Netherlands. This
year the main focus will be on prevention in cardiology.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and
disability in industrialized nations. The risk of cardiovascular
disease is significantly reduced by lifestyle choices that promote
cardiovascular health. Epidemiological data demonstrate that poor
dietary choices, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, stress, and
pollution all increase cardiovascular risk. The cardiovascular
community should therefore aim at reducing risk factors in order
to combat the underlying disease and to prevent the occurrence of
disease manifestations, particularly in patients with a high
suspicion of cardiac disease. On the other hand, drastic
prevention measures should be taken in patients with known
cardiovascular disease in order to prevent unwanted recurrences
thereby improving quality of life and prognosis. In our 6th
Course, exciting fields will be covered such as prevention of
coronary artery disease, prevention of severe valvular disease,
and sudden cardiac death and heart failure. Interesting topics
such as the value of ‘attacking’ risk factors (Euroaspire),
population screening, the role of biomarkers, calcium scoring, and
lifestyle adjustment will be extensively addressed. In addition,
prevention of sudden cardiac death and the role of cardiac
resynchronization therapy in the prevention of heart failure will
be discussed. The key role of cardiovascular imaging in the field
of prevention will be highlighted both during the presentations
and live demonstrations. Live/hands on courses will be given in
cardiac computed tomography (CT), echocardiography and
cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). In addition, there will
be live demonstrations from the catheterization laboratory,
focusing on the trans-apical approach for aortic valve replacement
and on stem cell treatment using 3D-navigation. Case discussions
will be used to illustrate the 2010 state-of-the-art procedures
within the context of prevention.
The organizing committee is honored that Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz
Kuck (Asklepios Hospital St. Georg, Hamburg, Germany) will present
the 30th Einthoven Lecture entitled: Role of catheter
ablation for prevention of sudden death.
Prof. Kuck is a world-known expert in the invasive treatment of
cardiac arrhythmias. Recently, Prof. Kuck was involved in an
Expert Consensus Committee on catheter ablation of ventricular
arrhythmias which was developed in a partnership with the European
Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), a registered branch of the
European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and the Heart Rhythm Society
(HRS); in collaboration with the American College of Cardiology
(ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA). We are very much
looking forward to meeting you in Leiden, Thursday 28 January and
Friday 29 January 2010!
